Our History Curriculum

At Tintwistle CE Primary School our vision for history is to spark curious historians who are facinated with learning about the past. This process of knowledge acquisition begins in Nursery and Reception where we aim to spark children's interest in the past by helping them understand the concepts of time change and memory through stories, family traditions and discussions about events in their own lives. Through play and conversation they start to learn about the sequencing of simple events. We have created our history curriculum to to ensure that it inspires the children's curiosity to learn about Britain, their local environment alongside the wider world and to act and think like historians  with a focus on local history and familiar aspects of the past. Our curriculum has been carefully planned to:

• Give children a deep chronological understanding of the UK and the local area, including its interactions with the wider world.

• Systematically develop a wide and deep understanding of historical  concepts, such as invasion and democracy.

• Expose children to significant ancient civilisations, empires and non-European societies

• Draw connection between different aspects of local, regional, national and international history.

• Use timeline to support organisation of substantive knowledge of key events and time periods

Although our history topics are informed by the National Curriculum, we are sensitive to the children's interests and include the historical context of our local area. All children regardless of their backgrounds, cultures and abilities are encouraged to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of our locality and the wider world.
